The Family Trumps All

Our families bring great joy and deep misery. Each person within the family makes contributions and at the same time presents the others in the group with challenges. Each family member has important needs that are difficult to meet within the family. Sometimes it is helpful to have someone outside the family unit examine the patterns of interaction that bring pain. A family therapist provides compassionate, realistic avenues for change and healing.

Family therapy is unlike any other kind of therapy. It’s a bundle of many experiences: a circus, a wild ride, a place of calm in a rough sea, moments of laughter, a chance to act out, a place of safety where tears are treated with kindness and dignity, and ultimately a process of reformatting. It is a huge honor to be part of any family’s process. My work as a mediator, counselor, parent, and farmer allow me to treasure the opportunity to join the organic process of a family’s move toward optimal functioning.

My assistance in family therapy relies on neuroscience, family systems and attachment studies, and archetypal psychology. In our work together, you’ll learn to decrease reactivity, heal past wounds, and deepen communication, love, and intimacy. Sometimes we also work on saying goodbye or making transitions to new relationships. In certain family groups, we might work to identify the support needed for children, the disabled, or elderly parents. Families sometimes request activities to work on their communication. There may be behaviors that cause pain. We can change these. Ultimately, it takes a village to support a healthy family. Therapy can be part of your village.
