College With Confidence

Creating the College Experience of Your Dreams

You may have journeyed to college with dreams of an exciting new life. Or, you may have come with dread and fears about what might be expected of you. Either way, we know that college is a stressful time and brings many surprises. We find ourselves lonely at the very time we are surrounded by so many people. We experience boredom while simultaneously being inundated with new concepts and information. And why do our bodies let us down? Headaches, sleeplessness, nausea, muscle aches….what do they tell us? Why are my hormones off the charts and there is no cute person to hold my hand? Sometimes we come to college with old wounds, a challenging family, an eating disorder, unresolved trauma, or academic uncertainty. We want relief.

Whatever the unique challenge, there is a way through. Acknowledging the challenges we face, and then seeking a trusted counselor, is often the best way to create the college life you really want. College should be an exquisite time. The time you dreamed of. The time you make your own way. Joseph Campbell said: “If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you its’ not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That’s why it’s your path.” In therapy we have the opportunity to create the experience you imagined when you took the college route.

Freedom is something you have to be very careful about. Whatever you do you find yourself in chains. The freedom not to do something means that you’re absolutely bound to do something else. And there are your chains. - Pablo Picasso

If you're studying for an exam you're not thinking about the results. If you're always worried about the results, you can't study a lot. So to be engaged and detached from the outcome is excellent. Excellence is behavior. I mean, isn't that what martial arts is about? And that's what meditation is about, that's what, in many ways, sports are about. - Deepak Chopra
